Mary Ann Anning was an early paleontologist who lived from 1799 to 1847. When she was a little girl, she and her father used to go to the ocean side and collect fossils together. Her dad was a cabinet maker, and he made extra money by selling the fossils they found together. When Mary Ann was 11 years old, her father died, but her love of fossils did not and she continued to hunt for them. While on a hunting excursion, her brother found a dinosaur skull and brought it to Mary Ann as a present. Mary Ann continued looking at the cliffs and found the rest of the skeleton. The dinosaur was an ichthyosaurus (looks like a crocodile) and was found in 1811 in England. After finding this, she continued her searches and continued to sell fossils. Mary Ann also found the first complete skeleton of the Plesiosaurus in 1823, the first Pterosaurs in 1828 and a Squaloraja fish skeleton in 1829. The work Mary Ann did was extremely dangerous. In 1833, she nearly lost her life at the cliffs while working on a skeleton removal. Instead, her favorite dog, Tray, was crushed. She was very upset about this since he had always gone on digs with her. While Mary Ann was never rich, she became one of the world's largest contributors to early paleontology and was well respected.
