The associative property means that you can add or multiply regardless of how numbers are grouped (doesn't matter where you put parenthesis).
Example:
8+(4+2) = 4+(2+8)
5x(2x4) = 2x(5x4)
Example:
8+(4+2) = 4+(2+8)
5x(2x4) = 2x(5x4)
